Child-led, not teacher-led
In a traditional classroom, the teacher decides what the whole group does at a given time. In a Montessori classroom, prepared materials are laid out so a child can choose an activity suited to their own developmental stage, and work through it at their own pace.
Mixed-age groupings
Montessori classrooms often mix age groups deliberately — younger children learn by observing older ones, and older children reinforce their own understanding by helping.
The teacher's role changes completely
